There are no words that can express how proud and delighted all Reading fans should be with this seasons achievement.
After last season’s defeat at Wembley, followed by a depressing pre-season, most notably with the departures of top players, Shane Long and Matt Mills, not many people (even me) were expecting anything to come of this season.
Not enough praise can be given to one man, Brian McDermott. He has created a team that has blown the rest of the division away in the latter part of the season on a small budget and created a team spirit that has carried this team to the top of the league and now in to the Premier League.
As far as turning points within a season go, Brian McDermott rejecting Wolves and agreeing a new contract in February is about as big as they come. In my opinion this gave the whole club a lift and the run of 46 points from a possible 51 has been nothing short of phenomenal.
The last time we were promoted was the record breaking season of 2005/06 with Steve Coppell in charge. This was another fantastic season and one that is unlikely to ever be beaten! The following season was also one to be proud of, with our team mixing it with the big boys and eventually finishing 8th in the Premier League. For this reason Steve Coppell has been considered our greatest ever manger, he is certainly our most successful.
But has McDermott now surpassed those achievements by Coppell? When Alan Pardew left in the 2003/04 season, the team that Coppell took over was already in a position that was able to challenge the playoffs and finished just outside the top 6 in Coppell’s first two years in charge. What came in the 2005/06 was of course unforgettable.
Brian McDermott on the other hand, took over a squad from Brendan Rodgers that was simply not a squad at all. Despite having a few talented youngsters it just wasn’t working for Rodgers and when he was sacked in December 2009 McDermott took over a squad lacking in confidence, belief and ideas. The turnaround that McDermott masterminded was incredible and the cup run in his first season, including one of the greatest nights in the clubs history, the 2-1 extra time win at Anfield was great for the fans. Last season was McDermott’s first full season and a great late run saw us reach the playoff final, where it wasn’t quite to be against Rodger’s Swansea side. Then of course came this season and what a season it has been. Results at grounds such as St.Mary’s and Upton Park were fantastic and seeing the sheer elation of the players last night was simply magical.Looking at the two managers head to head, Steve Coppell was in charge of Reading for 281 matches, winning 125, losing 88 and drawing 68 for an overall win percentage of 44.48%. McDermott has been in charge for 132 games now, winning 67, losing 31 and drawing 34 giving him an overall win percentage of 50.76%. Of course Coppell did have 2 seasons in the Premier League, but a win percentage of over 50% is to be respected at any level. They both have similarities, most notably with their measured approach and calmness in interviews. Even last night McDermott was calmness personified and even mentioned that he was only looking at the next game! There is no doubt that McDermott has done a fantastic job and every Reading fan should be proud to have such a humble, honest and loyal man in charge of our club. In my opinion McDermott now has to be considered on par with Steve Coppell and only the next few years will determine whether our current manager is the greatest that we have ever had.
Lastly I would just like to say how proud I am of the entire squad, management team and everyone involved with the club. I cannot wait for next season!
