According to the Daily Mail, Wolfsburg are interested in Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw, who has just entered into the final year of his contract.
What’s the story?
The Mail reports that the German side, who finished 16th in last season’s Bundesliga and narrowly avoided relegation, would like to sign Shaw this summer but that the Englishman is keen to stay at Old Trafford and earn a new deal.
The 23-year-old has been out of favour with United boss Jose Mourinho and made just 11 Premier League appearances last season. However, with Ashley Young returning late to preseason after his run with England in the World Cup and new signing Diogo Dalot suffering a knee injury that could see him miss the start of the season, Shaw could be in line for a start in United’s opening game against Leicester.
That said, with Mourinho often openly criticising Shaw, it may make sense for the man United paid £27m for in 2014 to move on for the good of his own career.
Rose replacement
Shaw’s fellow Englishman Danny Rose has also fallen in the pecking order at his current club. After struggling to recover from a knee injury last season, Rose lost his place in the side to Ben Davies and ended the season having made just 10 Premier League appearances.
Recently, according to Joe.co.uk, the odds on Rose joining newly-promoted Wolves have been slashed and French site Le 10 Sport reported earlier this summer that the 28-year-old was also a target for Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino may now be wise to offload Rose and bring in Shaw, who is still yet to reach his peak and could challenge Davies for a starting spot in the Argentine manager’s side. Valued at just £13.5m by Transfermarkt, Shaw could represent a bargain in an otherwise inflated market.
