Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to react after 90min revealed that the north Londoners are set to make a move for Rangers left-back Borna Barisic, as they prepare for life after Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose.
The report also states that Rangers are likely to want over £22m for their star full-back, who has earned 12 caps for the Croatia national team throughout his career.
Barisic only joined the Scottish giants in 2018 from NK Osijek in a deal worth £2.2m, but he has clearly impressed enough to have drawn admirers from the Premier League and also Italy’s top-flight – the aforementioned report mentions that Roma were interested in the left-back in January, but Rangers didn’t want to sell an important first-team player mid-season.
The 27-year-old has scored two goals this season, but more interestingly, has registered an eye-catching 14 assists in all competitions for the Gers – he truly has been one of Steven Gerrard’s best performers.
If Jose Mourinho loses Vertonghen and Rose this summer, then he will have just Ben Davies and also the versatile Japhet Tanganga as options at left-back – another left-sided defender would be a huge necessity in that case.
Let’s see how the Tottenham fans on Twitter reacted to the news…
To kick off the reaction, one fan didn’t seem to impressed with the news, asking how Spurs have sunk this low.
Two more supporters likened Barisic to former Tottenham full-back Alan Hutton – the Scot made 66 appearances for the north Londoners after signing from Rangers.
Elsewhere, another fan asked why the club aren’t interested in Alfredo Morelos as well – the Colombian hitman has netted an astonishing 29 goals and also has ten assists this season.
From non-League to the Premier League: Where did these top-flight stars begin their careers?
Another supporter made the valid point that, at 27 years of age, Barisic isn’t really what Spurs need – given the price tag mentioned, it would definitely seem like a poor long-term investment.
